ABOUT ME

Thankyou for visiting my website.

I began landscape painting in 1998 and my practice has been entirely 'en plein air' since 2002. This simply means that I paint all of my work on the spot, outdoors.

I use Old Holland oil paints, and work on small gessoed boards. I tape my boards into old jigsaw or LP boxes, enabling me to carry the wet paintings.

I travel by bus, train and on foot to reach the places that inspire me. And ferries when I'm in Scotland!

I usually sit on the ground to paint, surrounded by my kit. I find it more comfortable, and warmer too.

I usually complete a painting in one sitting. Sometimes I will work on one piece at the same location on multiple days, to achieve the level of detail that I want.

Working quickly is helpful, as the light changes and I'm always chasing it. In coastal subjects, the tides produce their own challenges, as I rush to capture a disappearing beach or rocks.

Working on a small scale makes everything more  practical.
